Each academic year, El Centro hires between 10 and 15 student staff who become Family Leaders for La Conexión or work as Office Coordinators. Although each student staff has a specific position, we expect all staff to be flexible and willing to assist with other duties as assigned.

La Conexión family leader plays a critical role in fulfilling the mission of La Conexión: To foster a strong sense of community, cultural pride, and academic confidence for Latino students at CSU. The Family Leader is a role model for La Conexión student participants so they may understand what it takes to be successful at CSU. Family Leaders support students with academic, social, and personal challenges they may encounter during their first year. There are also opportunities for professional development to enhance skills and abilities.

Office Coordinators focus on meticulous details that help the office function effectively. Some of their tasks include:

  • organizing aspects of the office such as paperwork, excel sheets, and computer files
  • marketing, updating the website/social media, and adding events to the CSU calendar
  • creating the majority of the office bulletins, holiday decorations, and staff birthday cards
  • supporting events by applying for grants, creating agendas, and selecting performers

The eligibility of working in El Centro is…

  • Must be a current undergraduate student at Colorado State University
  • Must maintain a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Must apply for Merit Work-Study with El Centro staff on Monday, April 3rd from 7:00-8:30am
  • Must be willing to commit to one full academic year (2017-2018)

Details of the position:

  • Work-study awards allow you to make up to $3,000 per academic year
  • Student staff work 10 weekly hours
    • Plus, it is required to work all El Centro sponsored events which occur at night and/or on weekends
  • Attend weekly meetings (1 hour a week)
  • Maintain office hours (8-9 hours a week)
  • Create a welcoming El Centro environment
  • Maintain great customer service
  • Foster relationships with student as well as El Centro staff
  • Practice effective time management
  • Assist with at least one El Centro sub-committee
  • Assist with additional El Centro programming (Triunfo, Las Comadres, Hablemos
  •  Spanish Conversations, etc.)
  • Attend all mandatory El Centro programs and events
