Mission Statement

El Centro provides an inclusive learning environment that welcomes all students. El Centro supports and strengthens the academic and cultural experience of students by providing workshops, leadership opportunities and Latina/o cultural awareness programs that promote student success and retention.

History

The Group Advocacy Program was established in the fall of 1979 to enhance the university's commitment to diversity. It was during this time that El Centro/Chicano Student Services was developed. Since then, the office has trasitioned to El Centro Student Services which is one office among the Advocacy Programs that supports, encourages, and enhances retention of Latino/a students.

Goals

  • Encourage Latino/a students to stay in school.
  • Support/encourage Latino/a students to pursue a higher education.
  • Increase the number of Latino/as pursuing Masters and Doctoral degrees.
  • Develop partnerships with local schools, agencies, and other communities surrounding CSU.
  • Provide opportunities for cultural enrichment, awareness, and cultural pride.
